Truman Capote’s Famous Party Was Theme For Debutante Party Honoring Six San Antonio German Club Debutantes

By Jake Gaines  Photography by J. Violet Photography

The Argyle was recently the setting for a Black & White Ball, honoring the “Party of the Century” theme that author Truman Capote so famously hosted in 1965. With pandemic protocol in place, six of this year’s class of San Antonio German Club debutantes were honored by their parents: Carrie and Tom Green for their daughter Katherine Lloyd Green, Nancy and Rob Finney for their daughter Caroline Elizabeth Finney, Jessica and Joe Bakke for their daughter Brooke Winslett Bakke, Beth and Clif Douglass for their daughter Katherine Elizabeth (Kate) Douglass, Amy and De Miller for their daughter Elaine Averett (Avery) Miller, and Tisha and Kyle Beck for their daughter Jane Cameron Beck. The theme’s colors were indeed black and white, yet the debs changed into vibrantly colorful formal gowns after switching from their white presentation dresses.

When guests stepped onto the teal carpeted entrance to the Argyle, they discovered the event covered the entire footprint of the venue, with a focus on the outdoors. Nature did not disappoint with perfect weather that evening. Beyond the sumptuous cuisine catered by the Argyle, the décor was traditional, including black and white bars and lattice tête-à-têtes, with beautifully appointed lounges under a sea of teal and gold paper lanterns among the oak trees. No detail was spared, and many guests commented that they had never seen the Argyle look so beautiful. The dance floor, where guests boogied the night away, was a traditional black and white accented by a teal glitter stage facade, all finished off with flowers in antique blue and white chinoiserie vases in varying shades of pink. The theme was brought to life by the luxury planning and design company, Cloche Events.

We all know that the Met Gala is the toughest ticket in town. Since it’s invitation-only, we wanted to share how the festivities shaped up last night to inspire your own fall dressing, with a bird’s eye look at the event…

With the cancellation of the event in 2021, due to the pandemic, plans have been in the works for its comeback. Part 1, last night, was centered around this year’s exhibition, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. The second part, slated for next May, when the gala usually occurs, is sure to be a showstopper.

The hosts of this year’s event, media stars Timothée Chalamet, Naomi Osaka, and Billie Eilish, didn’t disappoint with their Tik Tock generation P.O.V. An energetically youthful swagger throughout the event’s red carpet was palpable.

In fact, we’ve all come to expect opulent, extravagant fashion, really, costumes, at this Oscars for the fashion crowd. Yet, this year is special due to the pent-up demand of all-out glamour due to COVID-19.  Were there any surprises? Sure. Was there the feeding frenzy of the most visually appealing outfits by the paparazzi? You bet.

One thing you can be sure of with the Met Gala is that the lucky guests (and their style teams) put their all into what envelops their bodies for the occasion. Here’s a look at both our favorites, as well as some classics, that will invigorate your gala and red carpet dressing…

2020 Houston Ballet Ball Celebrates the 50th Anniversary

By Jennifer Roosth             Photography by Alida Bonifaz, Gary Fountain, Jacalyn Lawton, Wilson Parish, and Dave Rossman

THE SETTING:  For the first time since Hurricane Harvey, The Houston Ballet brought its annual event back to the Wortham Theater Center, its performance home, to celebrate an unforgettable golden 50th anniversary Ballet Ball. More than 400 guests clad in black tie made their way through Fish Plaza, with its shining runway covered in red carpet and lined with spotlights into the Wortham Theater. The room had been transformed into a glamourous golden palace, a nod to the 50th anniversary, by Richard Flowers of The Events Company. Tables covered in a mix of sparkling gold linens and mirrors lit the room. The look was elegantly completed by lush cream floors that paralleled crystal and custom gold chandeliers delicately suspended throughout the room.

THE STYLE:  Upon entering the theater, guests were greeted by Houston Ballet Academy dancers who donned gold costumes from classic Houston Ballet performances. The dinner, prepared by Jackson and Company, began with a golden caviar French macaron, black truffle and potato panna cotta followed by Lobster Bisque hand-poured by the servers–an elegant touch. The main course was a perfectly aged Angus beef tenderloin with haricots verts, rainbow baby carrots, polenta with caramelized shallots, and a gorgonzola tart.

For dessert, guests enjoyed Chocolat a la Margaret, a gold-painted chocolate sphere filled with chocolate mousse, hazelnut dacquoise, and glacé raspberries in honor of the tireless support of longtime patron Margaret Alkek Williams for her dedication, leadership, and commitment to the organization. As dessert was served, company dancers emerged from their seats and surrounding entrances surprising guests with a choreographed piece by Houston Ballet First Soloist, Oliver Halkowich. Guests were captivated by this moment and erupted in applause when Artistic Director Stanton Welch and Executive Director Jim Nelson joined the surprise performance. As the impromptu production came to an end, the dancers rolled out a commemorative nine-foot cake, adorned with 50th anniversary candles, onto the dance floor before the gold confetti grand finale.

THE PURPOSE:  Beth and Nick Zdeblick chaired the event this year, while Phoebe and Bobby Tudor served as honorary chairs. The annual event raised nearly $1.8 million for the Houston Ballet, making it the most successful Ballet Ball in its history, and this over-the-top golden anniversary event will not soon be forgotten.
