Over 1,200 business leaders, book lovers, sociables, and philanthropists arrived for the 30th annual A Celebration of Reading benefiting two foundations named in honor of Barbara Bush. The 2024 event was even more special with it being the 100th anniversary of the birth of Former President George H.W. Bush.
THE STYLE: The cocktail-attired crowd began the evening mingling in the foyer of the Hobby Center, where guests had the opportunity to meet the featured authors ahead of the evening program. Patrons then took to their seats in the venue’s theatre, where they were treated to a living room set on the stage.
During the program, literary lovers heard readings from top authors, including Jean Becker, Brad Taylor, and Chris Bohjalian. The program closed with a 20-minute set by author and comic Gary Gulman. After which, revelers enjoyed a multi-course meal courtesy of City Kitchen Catering set against stunning spring hydrangea and tulip tablescapes courtesy of HEB. All of this capped off a perfect evening of great literature, fantastic food, and excellent company.
THE PURPOSE: A Celebration of Reading, chaired by Neil Bush with Doro Bush Koch serving as honorary chair, raised $2.2 million for the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation and the Barbara Bush Foundation For Family Literacy. Upon entering the theatre, guests were wowed as they looked at the stage, which featured a replica of the living room inside George H.W. and Barbara Bush’s former residence.
Once patrons took to their seats, the festivities were kicked off with words from Neil and Maria Bush, son and daughter-in-law of Barbara Bush, which was followed by words from several other Bush family members. The evening then continued with conversations with several best-selling and acclaimed authors.
Featured authors included New York Times bestselling author Tess Gerritsen, Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist Isabel Wilkerson, and Seven-time New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille. The festivities were capped off by Reverend Dr. Russell Jones Levenson Jr. who shared touching memories of President George H.W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush during each of their final moments of life.
